Friday we left Desert Hot Springs in Southern California and headed west, then north. The idea is to head EAST and north, but those darn mountains are in the way. We had to go as far west as San Bernardino, then we caught the road (I-15) up to Las Vegas, Nevada.

Along the way, we went through Barstow, California, and the Mohave River. Yeah, just like the desert. Dry as a bone.
We came to...what do you know...we must be in Nevada! How can you tell?

While on the way, we go by the Mohave Desert. These things were standing out in the field. Or outstanding in the field? Not sure what they were there for.

So we arrived in Las Vegas Friday evening, and we were both kind of wiped. We hadn’t slept very well over the previous couple of nights, so we just wanted to hang out. We had plans to go into town, but...we could donate to the casinos the next day.
The next day (Saturday) we did go into town. We drove to Treasure Island and could park there for free. Great deal. So we did a bit of gambling at Treasure Island. I wasn’t in too bad a shape after that, although Gerard was down somewhat. We decided to take a walk down the Strip and grab some lunch.
We went by Caesar’s Palace. A HUGE property. Is this what you call a D...head? Sorry, couldn’t resist. Gerard actually suggested it.

Have to say, you see everything here, whether you want to or not...and I don’t mean the statue above. Anyway, Caesars is one of the most impressive properties here. This is only a quarter of it.
After grabbing some lunch at Caesars, we went over to Paris and did a bit more gambling. Fortunately, I came out on top, and Gerard broke even. So that was enough for today. We wandered a bit more, then left to go back to our RV.
So today we decided to check out some hiking in the area. The Red Rock Canyon Conservation Area is just west of Las Vegas, about half an hour from our place, so we headed out there. Beautiful spot.
The rocks speak for themselves.

They were formed after several layers of sand were hardened, and various other geologic conditions occurred. You can look it up on Wiki, I’m sure, if you’re interested. The red is from iron in the stone, of course. The white part is where underground water washed away the iron, and then it was all lifted by the earth upheaving.

And this is across the valley looking at the red rocks.

We came back from hiking and decided to head back into town again to check out the casino one more time. Success again! Overall, we were up about $200 - I won over $370, and well, you can figure out what happened with the difference. That’s the way it goes sometimes, either you win or lose. I haven’t won for some time, so I’m happy about it.
So we leave here tomorrow morning, starting our trek east.
