We’re Still Here

Sorry, I haven’t been as diligent getting to this blog as in the past.

Thursday we all did some chores and “must do” things around the RV park.

One boring little fact...we noticed this street sign in our RV Park — funny because we are at “SUNRISE RV Resort” and we are going to “CALIENTE Springs RV Resort” after this.

Anyway, Thursday evening we went to the Organ Stop Pizza for dinner with the Hollingers.  What a place.  If you’ve been in this area and never been to it, you’re missing something.  One of our neighbours here was telling us about it.

These 2 guys were there.

The place is huge, and the centre of it is this gigantic organ.  All the displays around pertain to the organ.  The organist plays all kinds of tunes, including requests.

This gives you some idea of the size.  We were in the balcony.

When the set starts, the organ rises out of the stage, and goes back down when the set is over.  Cool idea.

Anyway, if you’re ever in the Mesa area, it’s a must-do at least once.

Friday, Gerard and I went for a hike back in Lost Dutchman State Park.  We saw this insect with a bright red butt.  I thought it was a bee on the ground at first, but I don’t think so.  It crawled like a large ant.  I don’t know what it was.

An very cool sundial.

In our RV park, along the road we take in and out all the time, there’s this German Shepard.  Every time we go by, he has something in his mouth...like this.  He makes me laugh.

On Saturday, we decided to go to an Arizona Coyotes hockey game.  The Edmonton Oilers were in town.  It’s over in Glendale, about an hour’s drive from our place...on a Saturday.  It would be more on a weeknight, I’m sure.

We have to say, the area around the arena is a very nice spot to be.  Lots of restaurants, and fountains like this one.  Beautiful.  Reminds me of a ski resort village.

So here we are in the arena.  Glad we didn’t pay to sit down in the lower level.  The game was terrible.  Edmonton looked like they just didn’t care to be there.  But it was fun howling like a Coyote...ow ow oooowwwwww.

When it was over, we came back to our place for a burger, our last night with the Hollingers.  They’re heading down to Tucson for a week as other friends of theirs are going to be there.

We did see them yesterday morning though, at the Mesa Marketplace.  Earlier in the week, I was telling them about this place, so we agreed to go Sunday morning.  Then some plans changed...I was going to have my cousins over Friday night for dinner and some catching up, but Friday was going to not be very nice (weather-wise) so we changed it to Sunday evening instead.  As a result, I was a little pre-occupied to spend a lot of time at the market.  Anyway, we said our good-byes there.  We’ll see them again in about a month in California.

So last night we had my cousins, Laura and Kathleen, and Jim and Don of course, to our place for dinner.  It turned out that Kathy (the person behind us here in the park) is from Saskatchewan — we had played Jokers and Marbles with them a couple of weeks ago — and my cousin, Kathleen, knows her very well.  They reconnected for a bit.  Such a small world...what are the chances?  Turns out Kathy and Norm (behind us) are Roughrider fans — what a surprise.

Anyway, we had a great time with them.  So nice to reconnect.  They winter in Mesa, and have for the last number of years.  (I’ll send photos when I get them.)

  1. Jeez, I've missed a lot in this post alone, let alone the next two or three. This is a good one too. The Organ Stop pizza place is insane. I bet those pizzas were pretty pricey, but then, what a novel idea for a pizza joint. I have no idea what that bug is. I did some searching around the internet, and couldn't come up with anything. Turns out there are heaps of different species of insect in Arizona...

    1. Yes, and I’m glad the insects are not really an issue this time of year. Neither are the snakes! Yay. Too cold for them.

The Last Legs of our Trip

So we left Oklahoma and arrived in Arkansas and spent the night in North Little Rock.  We had been here last year on the way south.   We decided to go for dinner in Little Rock.  It was Saturday night of the Easter weekend.  We found a brew pub called the Lost Forty Brewing Company.  Neat place.  Not too many choices for dinner, but it was fine.  We did a beer flight each to check out the different types. Thought the sign into the washroom was really neat...unique. This is the spot - in an industrial area, but very close to the Clinton Museum and Park. So we left Arkansas and entered Tennessee at Memphis...the Mississippi River divides them.  We’re going over the bridge here. We spent the night in Dickson, Tennessee, about 25 miles or so from Nashville.  So today we finished off Tennessee and also Kentucky. We crossed the Ohio River - this is the old bridge and new bridge, I guess.  Our GPS didn’t know where we were...so must be pretty n...

Getting Started

Thought I would create another blog.  It really does help me keep track of stuff for photos later.  And some people do want to read it.  That’s good, I guess.  I’m glad.  I won’t publish every day, but after I’ve got some stuff to talk about. _______________ Sorry...I don’t know what’s going on with the first line.  I’ll have to see if I can fix it. We had a leisurely morning, this morning, packing up the rest of the stuff to take along with us, and we were off!  Well, after we turned around at Bridgeport Rd to go back and get my sunglasses 😕😎 Now we’re off...about 10:45 am. Made it to the Ambassador Bridge border crossing around 2 pm.  Nicest border guard going into the U.S. in a long time.  He actually smiled, sort of.  Interstate 75 southbound is closed for about 8 miles. As we recalled, it was closed last year too.  It’s a 2-year project, replacing bridges, etc.  Anyway, it wasn’t too far out of the way to tak...

Albuquerque

Always heard of Albuquerque but have never been here, until now.  I have even committed the spelling of Albuquerque to memory. There were a couple of things we wanted to do here.  One was a hike in the Petroglyphs area and the other was to check out old town Albuquerque. So Wednesday morning we headed off to the Petroglyph National Monument.  The whole park area has lots of petroglyphs but we visited the Piedras Marcadas Canyon section which has 5000!  These were left both by the native Indian tribes and by Spanish explorers and settlers of the area. This roadrunner was out to see them too. I didn’t take photos of all 5000...are you disappointed?  But here are a couple. This one kind of reminds me of “Wilson” on Cast Away. The rock is black basalt (lava rock) formed a very long time ago.  Much of this part of New Mexico is covered in it.  I noticed it while driving on Tuesday as well. Finger painting? Very neat area to visit - and got some hiking in to...
